Long Beach Airport is to undergo a series of enhancements aimed at improving the flow of traffic and passenger convenience, starting the evening of January 8, 2024, according to the City of Long Beach Public Information Office. Central to these upgrades, a $16.6 million Terminal Roadway Improvements Project will effectively streamline vehicle and pedestrian movement, with particular attention to individuals facing mobility challenges.
In a press release from the City of Long Beach, Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the longevity of the airport’s dedication to progress, noting, "This integral component of our pre-security improvement program at Long Beach Airport will offer travelers an even more seamless and convenient experience." The project features enhanced American with Disability Act (ADA) amenities including new curb access ramps, signs, and audible warning systems at pedestrian crossings to better serve those with disabilities.
Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr, as mentioned in the release, addressed potential concerns about the construction's impact, saying, "Temporary disruptions caused by construction will pay off in the long road, improving the overall flow of vehicle and passenger traffic." Construction activities are scheduled to occur during nighttime hours to reduce disruptions, running from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with completion anticipated for fall 2024.
Travelers are encouraged to visit a dedicated construction website for updated information and tips to navigate the construction smoothly. Respecting the community's convenience, Long Beach Airport Director Cynthia Guidry stated, "We commit to upholding our reputation as an airport where 'the going is easy' even during construction by ensuring that our guests are informed and know what to expect." Guidry underscores the airport's commitment to maintaining high standards of service through this transition period.
The funding for this comprehensive endeavor comes partly from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which contributed $10.6 million, with the remaining amount covered by airport revenues. For questions regarding the project, individuals can contact the construction hotline at 562.445.6439 or email [email protected]. The airport also has indicated that additional signage will be installed to assist travelers in navigating the construction areas with ease.
