A toddler's solitary peril on a boat in Marina del Rey has led to the arrest of the child's mother and her male companion this past Sunday, officials said. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, alerted by a concerned citizen, discovered the young child alone on a vessel docked in Basin B around 4:40 p.m., as described in an Instagram post by the sheriff's department.
The alarming find triggered a search operation, with fears that an adult may have accidentally fallen overboard. Divers from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were deployed into the murky waters, while authorities hoped for the best, but prepared, for the grim prospect of a body submerged unseen, as KABC reported. The mother and her companion reappeared several hours later and were confronted with child endangerment charges.
While details surrounding the circumstances that left the child unattended are still under wraps, the toddler, thankfully unharmed through the ordeal, is now in the custody of the LA County Department of Children and Family Services. Law enforcement continues to probe into the evening's mysterious sequence of events that left a mother and her boyfriend in handcuffs, according to a statement obtained by FOX LA.
The sheriff's department lauded the vigilance of civilians, emphasizing the critical role that public awareness and quick reporting can play in potentially life-saving scenarios. "In this instance they most likely saved the life of an innocent toddler,” the department reflected, in a testament to community watchfulness, as per the KTLA report. Authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation into this harrowing incident presses on.
