A tragic start to the New Year unfolded as gunfire ripped through a New Year's Eve celebration in Los Angeles, leaving two people dead and eight injured. The Los Angeles Police Department is urgently calling for public assistance to track down the suspects involved in the senseless violence that shattered the holiday festivities.

The incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2024, around 1:00 a.m., as officers patrolling the Newton Area were alerted to an "ambulance shooting" near 15th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. Upon their arrival, they were confronted with the sound of gunfire compelling them to quickly redirect towards Porter Street. They found a large group of people attempting to flee the chaos.

Officers discovered multiple victims scattered along the street and sidewalk, between Santa Fe Avenue and Mateo Street, immediately rendering medical aid as they waited for paramedics. The Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived shortly after and continued efforts to save lives. Despite swift medical attention, two victims, a man and a woman, succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Subsequent investigation shed light on the incident's origins. Victims were gathered at an underground party in the 2300 block of Porter Street to ring in the New Year. A dispute broke out abruptly between partygoers leading unknown assailants to begin firing indiscriminately, striking ten individuals in total.

The LAPD has issued a plea for anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward. Detective Howarth of the Operations-Central Bureau Homicide can be contacted at 213-996-4143. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online via their website.
