The City of San Bernardino is welcoming back an old face to lead its Public Works Department. Officials announced that Lynn Merrill, a veteran with four decades under his belt in public works and waste management, is taking up the reins once more, this time as the city's Public Works Director.
Merrill, who previously served the city from 1994 to 2004, left an impactful mark during his tenure, managing crucial services such as streets, sewer collection, and solid waste. City Manager Charles Montoya was quoted in a recent press release, saying, “Lynn Merrill has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we are thrilled that he is back in San Bernardino. With his proven track record, our Public Works Department could not be in better hands,” a vote of confidence in Merrill's ability to steer the department towards future success.
Following his initial stint in San Bernardino, Merrill struck out on his own, establishing a consulting firm that catered to the public sector. His expertise in municipal operations kept him in demand across various cities in the Inland Empire, where he filled in as Public Works Director, supervisor, and fleet manager in various capacities.
Proclaiming his enthusiasm for the role, Merrill said, “San Bernardino is on the cusp of becoming a leading city in the Inland Empire. I am excited to return as Public Works Director and be part of the team that will be setting the course for a bright and shining future for the City,” according to the press release. Since December 2023, he's served as the interim head, a position set to solidify come February 5, 2024.
In his new role, Merrill will oversee the department which boasts 136 professional and operational staff, ensuring efficient management of capital projects, fleet, environmental compliance, traffic operations, and maintenance and operations. Beyond infrastructure, Public Works also extends its care to city parks, community centers, and senior centers.
