In a classic bait-and-switch con, a scammer using a woman's Facebook profile offered the man two tickets to the Detroit Lions playoff game set for Jan. 21.He made the payment through Venmo, only to be asked for more cash to complete the ticket transfer, he told authorities.

A staggering $2.7 billion was lost to such scams between January 2021 and June 2023, according to a report by the Federal Trade Commission, cited by ClickOnDetroit. Wickersham's office shared a list of tips, including advising residents to limit post visibility and verifying a company's legitimacy before parting with any money.
