A tragic incident unfolded on an Arlington interstate Wednesday evening when a man was struck and killed by multiple vehicles. The Arlington Police Department reported that the fatal accident occurred in the westbound lanes of I-20 near Bowen Road around 8:50 p.m., according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
First responders arrived at the chaotic scene to find remnants of the deadly encounter. A 2009 Lexus RX 350 driven by an unidentified woman was involved in what she believed to quickly be a collision with a pedestrian, who had "suddenly appeared in front of her," as noted in her declaration to officers. The woman's initial response was to immediately stop and dial 911, a detail confirmed through a police briefing. Her cooperation with law enforcement has, to this date, absolved her of any impending charges linked to the incident.
The aftermath of the collision presented a grim discovery of human remains nearby, signifying the brutality of a sequence where the man was successively hit by several other vehicles. The identity of the man remains a mystery, and the reasons behind his presence on the highway at that hour are unclear. Those who collided with him are believed to have not been able to see him in time to avoid the tragic event, as per WFAA.
In light of this disastrous occurrence, the Arlington Police Department took the opportunity to sternly remind the public to never venture onto highway lanes on foot. "Due to the speeds vehicles are traveling and the distance they require to brake, attempting to cross a highway is extremely dangerous and can lead to a catastrophic collision," police emphasized in the release. Pedestrians are urged to instead use designated crossings and sidewalks that are available along overpasses and underpasses for such purposes. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office is working to positively identify the deceased pedestrian, as per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
