Walter Brown, 30, was handed a 19-month prison sentence on Tuesday after a dramatic encounter with law enforcement officers in Mankato, during which he illegally took his toddler and later engaged in a standoff with authorities. CBS News Minnesota reported that Brown showed up uninvited at the apartment of his child's mother on March 24, violating a domestic abuse no-contact order, and fled with the 2-year-old.
The saga escalated weeks later, on April 18, when Mankato Public Safety officers, found Brown in Mankato. According to a Facebook post by the Mankato Police and Fire departments, while attempting to apprehend him, Brown ran and fired a gun at an officer. The situation deteriorated as he barricaded himself within an apartment on the 2200 block of Marwood Drive, with the 2-year-old still in his custody.
The standoff, which spanned several days, ended with Brown in custody and the child found safe. Court documents indicated that in October, Brown pleaded guilty to charges including violation of a no-contact order, refusing to return the minor child, and two counts of assault. Notably, Brown has been credited for nine months already served.
The incident triggered a "shelter in place" for the Hilltop Lane area, which was later lifted as the officer involved was not injured. The Mankato Public Safety, while appreciative of the community's patience, asked for continued avoidance of the area during their investigation with partner agencies. No further details have been provided as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
