The Austin Independent School District is all set to officially bring in Matias Segura as the new superintendent after a period of flux in leadership. Segura, previously operating as the interim superintendent, was named the lone finalist for the top spot on December 14. Following the state's requisite 21-day wait after announcing a finalist, the board is scheduled to approve his contract during a meeting on January 25, as reported by Community Impact.
In the interim role, Segura pulled a $315,908.90 a year, and also enjoyed a $720 cellphone stipend, and a $9,000 travel stipend. Members of the community will get two chances to question Segura before his official appointment; the first via Zoom on January 18 and the second at Marshall Middle School on January 20. This comes after significant scrutiny of the district's operations, including responses to an investigation by the Texas Education Agency into its special education department, reported by The Austin American-Statesman.
Segura's rise to the superintendent position is noteworthy for its homegrown nature. Board member Kathryn Whitley Chu highlighted this, saying, "He's a product of Austin ISD, the son of a beloved Austin ISD teacher and a proud parent of two Austin ISD students," as per Community Impact.
