In the City of Mesquite, local authorities took to the streets on New Year's Eve to ensure the festivities didn't get out of hand. The effort by the Mesquite Police and Fire Department was extensive and no-nonsense, deploying nine specialized teams to crack down on illegal activities such as fireworks, celebratory gunfire, and drunk driving, according to the City of Mesquite, Texas.
Throughout the night, Mesquite's finest confiscated a hefty 26 pounds of fireworks and seized 15 firearms, putting a damper on potentially dangerous revelry. Made with care to preserve public safety, officers also nabbed 10 inebriated drivers off the city's roads, making sure that cheers didn't end up in tears.
While the skies were alight with celebrations, three minor fires related to fireworks required the Fire Department's attention. Reports confirmed that there were no injuries due to either the pyrotechnics or any gunshots. It was a night where danger lurked in the shadows of celebration, but vigilance by emergency services ensured the city danced into the New Year unscathed.
"Thank you to our Police, Fire, and Dispatch personnel as well as the Call Center volunteers who worked over New Year’s to keep our community safe," hailed City Manager Cliff Keheley, speaking about the night's safety measures. Residents, too, were thanked for lending their eyes and ears, reporting incidents that might have marred the festive night, as per the City of Mesquite, Texas.
