In a demonstration of solidarity and respect, Michigan is coming together to honor and support the family of fallen Michigan State Police Trooper Joel Popp, who died in the line of duty during a traffic stop - a tragedy that has created waves of support from individuals and organizations alike.
According to FOX 2, generosity flowed at an Oakland County gas station where Eddie Osman, the Marathon gas station owner, initiated a 48-hour fundraiser for Popp's family; starting today, the station will donate 25 cents of each gallon of gas sold to aid the trooper's wife Stefanie and their young daughter Popp had been investigating a traffic stop in Saginaw County when he was struck and killed on January 24, he had served with the MSP since January 2020.
Simultaneously, a local non-profit apparel company, "Hold The Line," created by first responders, launched a 'benefit collection,' as recounted by a WZZM 13 report; they swiftly began selling t-shirts, stickers, and challenge coins to honor Trooper Popp's memory, channeling all proceeds to his bereaved family, with "about 1000 different orders" already placed, the community immediately responded to the call for solidarity.
As detailed by Hoodline, the visitation for Trooper Popp was held at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, with the funeral service scheduled today at Saginaw Valley State University's Ryder Center, with many officers statewide expected to attend, to pay respects to the 39-year-old trooper, MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II acknowledged the gravity of the loss, stating, “This is a message none of us wishes to deliver. With a very heavy heart I confirm the death of one of our own, Tpr. Joel Popp,” marking him as the 56th MSP trooper to die in the line of duty.
