A man was arrested early Sunday after he allegedly broke into an apartment, threatened to kill the mother of his child, fired at police officers, and assaulted several people in a separate location. The suspect, identified as Kamau Evans was taken into custody after a sequence of violent events that began around 3:10 a.m. in Minneapolis, as per the Minneapolis Police Department.
The ordeal started on the 2400 block of Ogema Pl, where Evans reportedly broke into the apartment of a 41-year-old woman, who had an active Order for Protection against him. The woman, her 19-year-old son, and her infant were unharmed, despite the threats. Evans, born on 7/16/1992, fled the scene before police arrival, according to Minneapolis Police Department.
Minutes later at 3:27 a.m., officers were dispatched to a second address at 2319 W Broadway due to a ShotSpotter activation and 911 calls reporting the shattering of a patio door. Evans had allegedly entered that home and assaulted a 74-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, and a 7-year-old child, all related to the woman from the Ogema Pl. incident.
Evans was taken to HCMC for treatment of injuries likely sustained from his fall, and will be booked on charges of 1st Degree Assault. Meanwhile, forensic scientists have gathered evidence from the Broadway scene that corroborates the gunfire. The elderly female victim was hospitalized for assault injuries while the young child was also taken for a medical evaluation. "I am incredibly grateful for the bravery of the Minneapolis Police Officers who responded, entered to confront an armed suspect, put their lives on the line, and exercised extreme restraint under the most difficult of conditions," said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara in the release about the incident, "We emphasize the sanctity of human life as being paramount in all we do. This is what that looks like. We pray that all involved can recover from this trauma," reported by the Minneapolis Police Department.
