Minnesotans with a penchant for personalizing their rides have hit the jackpot as the Department of Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) unveils a record-breaking number of specialty license plates in 2024. The bureau added nine fresh plaques this year, with sports-themed options like Timberwolves, Lynx, and Wild taking the spotlight. Motorists can also align with service by sporting the Lions Club plate, a nod to civic pride.

As noted in the Wright County announcement, there are a few plates like the Minnesota United and those honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) still waiting in the wings. In a show of popularity, nearly 4,000 blackout plates were snagged since the start of the year throughout the state.

Those looking to jump on the specialty bandwagon will shell out an initial $15.50 plus a yearly contribution of $30, exclusive of registration and filing fees. Fans of the Vikings and admirers of the sleek blackout design will find these plates readily available, albeit as inventory allows, for same-day purchase in deputy registrar offices like the Wright County License Center.

All the shiny new tags, ensuring each driver's tail tells a tale, are up for grabs online or for those preferring a more tactile experience, directly at a registrar's office. Ordered plates arrive by mail, per the DVS procedures. The bureau's special plates portfolio now boasts 123 varieties, sending out about 143,000 special plates last year alone. Detailing each option, an online brochure is accessible for motorists mulling their choices.
