The streets of Moorpark were under the watchful eye of local law enforcement during a recent DUI checkpoint, where 377 drivers were subject to a close inspection of their credentials and sobriety. Moorpark Police Department set up the checkpoint on December 29, 2023, on westbound Tierra Rejada Road near Mountain Trail Court from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., targeting impaired drivers and checking for valid driver's licenses, according to a report released by the department.
As a result of this initiative, one driver was cited for operating a vehicle with a suspended license, and three were cited for driving without a license, the costs for those caught driving under the influence can burn a $13,500 hole in their wallets once fines, DUI classes, and an anticipated spike in auto insurance premiums are accounted, Numbers tallied up by the Moorpark PD show that deputies there made 113 DUI arrests in 2023, suggesting a dogged pursuit of anyone driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs like marijuana, which can impair driving skills, particularly when mixed with booze or other substances.
"DUI Doesn't Just Mean Booze" warns Moorpark PD as they remind drivers of the dangers of operating a vehicle while impaired by prescription drugs, especially those with warning labels against driving or operating machinery, a clear risk factor for DUI arrest and conviction.
The local law enforcement, committed to public safety and keeping impaired drivers off the streets, plans to host more checkpoints like this one in the future, each operation part of a broader strategy to reduce deaths and injuries arising from impaired driving, funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Traffic Safety Administration, seeking to make the streets a safer place for all.
Further details on recent and upcoming checkpoints and efforts by the department can be obtained from Sergeant David Anaya, whose contact information was provided in the department's news release on January 11. Moorpark's policing efforts continue to reflect a dedication to road safety and the prevention of the potentially devastating consequences of impaired driving.
