A tragic collision claimed the life of a motorcycle rider in Huntington Beach last night, law enforcement reported. The incident occurred at the intersection of Gothard Street and Center Avenue around 9:00 p.m., according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.
The fatal encounter involved a blue Honda Civic and a red Harley-Davidson motorcycle, with officers from the HBPD arriving at a grim scene to find the 46-year-old male motorcyclist from Midway City dead. In stark contrast, uninjured, the 66-year-old female driver from Huntington Beach was the sole occupant of the Honda. This unfortunate event unfolded as the Harley-Davidson headed north, and seemed to falter, crossing into the path of the southbound Honda's trajectory, as the official report details.
The preliminary inquiry by the authorities suggests that the motorcycle lost control, causing it to veer into oncoming traffic. According to the Huntington Beach Police Department's statement, the Honda was in the southbound #2 lane of Gothard Street when the motorcycle careened into it following the abrupt stop of the car.
While the Honda's driver cooperated with investigators and impairment is not suspected to have been a factor on her part, it remains unclear whether impairment contributed to the motorcycle rider's actions before the collision. The official investigation, spearheaded by the HBPD Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), continues. Anyone with information about this tragic incident, including the events preceding the collision, is urged to reach out to HBPD Traffic Investigator V. Rattanchandani at (714) 536-5231.
