A juvenile has been nabbed by police in New Bedford for possessing a gun and ammo, authorities said. During a surveillance operation in the city's south end on January 13, detectives from the Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau spotted what they deemed suspicious behavior around 3 PM in a supermarket parking lot, leading to the apprehension of a 17-year-old.
Following the vehicle from the parking lot, Detective Sgt. Jarrod Gracia kept eyes on until a stop was conducted at the Dartmouth St./Fair St. intersection, as reported in New Bedford Police Department's Facebook page. Inconsistencies in the narratives provided by the three individuals in the car warranted a search, which, unearthed a Polymer 80 firearm and ammunition in the backseat, where the juvenile was sitting, with, a magazine and 16 rounds of .40 caliber rounds were also found.
The discovery of the firearm, which combined with the ammunition and a high-capacity magazine—defined under Massachusetts law as holding more than 10 rounds—resulted in the teenager's arrest. The young suspect faces charges of carrying a firearm and possessing both ammunition and a high-capacity feeding device.
Details of the arrest were posted on New Bedford Police Department's official social media, along with a call for the public to share any information anonymously through their website or by calling a dedicated crime hotline. Detective Jonathan Miranda was credited with the arrest, the department further revealed, the firearm recovered is part of an ongoing issue of illegal guns finding their way into the hands of youth.
