The scramble for support intensifies as the Republican presidential primary sees its once-contested field quickly narrow down to a two-person race. Governor Ron DeSantis's unexpected drop from the race Sunday, endorsing former president Donald Trump, has intensified the spotlight on former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is now Trump's primary contender. In a strategic final push, Haley is gunning to sway votes in New Hampshire with scheduled appearances in Franklin and Salem, while Trump is set to rally supporters in Laconia after dealing with his defamation trial in New York, according to a KXAN report.
Republican political consultant Matt Mackowiak put forward, "She didn’t get the huge boost out of Iowa that she wanted," referring to Haley, who now "got to probably win New Hampshire to have a pathway forward." Mackowiak, in an interview with Inside Texas Politics, cited in the KVUE report.
While the GOP grapples with the implications of DeSantis's departure, the likelihood of Trump clinching the nomination seems to swell. The former president, fresh off a decisive victory in Iowa, now faces less gridlock to potentially lock in his running mate—stalwarts have indeed begun what appears to be the veepstakes for a spot a heartbeat away from the presidency, as indicated by visits from prominent Republicans to key primary states.
The GOP faces not only the urgency of the primaries but also the looming financial prowess of President Joe Biden. "This is a problem, I think, growing for the GOP side is that Biden, I think, has the largest war chest of any incumbent President at this point. And he’s going to be able to raise those resources," Mackowiak said. With Biden's campaign cash on hand reportedly around $117 million, the Republican nominee, be it Trump or Haley, will surely have a financial hill to climb come November.
As voters in New Hampshire take to the polls tomorrow, the direction of the GOP and the shape of the forthcoming presidential race hang in the balance. Frenzied politicking may decide the fate and strategies of the Republican candidates as they navigate through the thickets of these early and decisive primaries.
