Commuters faced major disruptions Monday morning when an eastbound Yellow line train partially derailed between Orinda and Lafayette stations, prompting closures and a scramble for alternative travel options. According to BART's official X account, the incident, which occurred just after 9am, led to no injuries, although two train cars caught fire.

The Orinda Fire Department has since extinguished the fires, yet both Orinda and Lafayette stations remain closed, with BART Police and additional staff deployed to assist. Passengers were safely evacuated and escorted to Orinda Station, spotlighting the necessity of rapid response and the importance of emergency preparedness. A major delay on the Antioch Line in both the Antioch and SFO directions has put a severe dent in the day's commute, as the train between Orinda and Lafayette is "unable to move and passengers have off boarded the train," BART reported.
In a statement obtained by BART's news release, the transit authority advised Yellow line riders to seek alternative transportation and noted that at present, there is no available bus bridge. However, staff is reportedly coordinating with partner bus agencies to provide additional transit options.
Travelers in the area are advised to stay informed through BART's social media updates and plan their journeys accordingly, as the disruption is likely to continue until the full details of the derailment are ascertained and resolved, and deficient commuter services have resumed to their full capacity. For updates and further information, BART has urged passengers to check their official communications channels.
