The funeral service for Coach Sarden is set to take place at Saint Phillip AME Church on January 12. Visitation will be held the prior day at Gregory B. Levett & Sons, allowing those touched by Sarden's life to pay their respects. The North Atlanta High School community is grappling with the sudden loss of Kerry Sarden, a prominent and beloved teacher and coach, whose death was reported earlier this week. School principal Curtis Douglass confirmed the sorrowful news, telling the school that "Losing a member of our North Atlanta family is an immense tragedy that affects us all," as obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Sarden, who dedicated over 16 years to teaching health and fitness, was more widely known for his passion to perfectly lead as coach of the boys' varsity basketball and golf teams. In 2019, he propelled the basketball team to momentous heights, netting a Region Championship and securing a State Final Four spot. That same year he was honored as APS coach of the year, as detailed by Hoodline. His prowess on the basketball court began in his youth, stretching from Southeastern High School in Detroit to his collegiate days at The University of Michigan and Olivet College, and eventually overseas, where he played professionally in Milan, Italy.
The tragic news has visibly shaken the North Atlanta High School, with Douglass offering his heart and prayers to those mourning: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Coach Sarden’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time," as reported by Hoodline. Grief counselors are expected to be available to help students and faculty during this challenging period, addressing the wide-reaching impact of Sarden's passing on the school community.
Sarden leaves behind his wife, Joan, and two sons, Dr. Kerry Sarden, Jr. and Kody Sarden. In a heartfelt communication, Douglass stressed the importance of the community coming together, saying, "Let us unite as a community and support one another through every phase of this sorrowful time," as quoted by FOX 5 Atlanta.
