A blaze in North Austin thrust residents from their slumber and homes in the wee hours of Thursday morning, as flames erupted from an apartment complex, prompting evacuations and emergency response. The Austin Fire Department raced to the Bent Tree Apartments on Bent Tree Road after receiving reports of the fire at approximately 4:48 a.m., which is situated west of MoPac and north of Steck Avenue.
The conflagration, which ignited on a second-floor balcony, quickly spread into the adjacent apartment, leading to a total loss of both. It voraciously traveled into the attic of the building, creating an exigent situation that saw firefighters evacuating the entire building as a precaution. In an effort organized by the complex’s management and the American Red Cross, a total of sixteen people from eight units have been barred from returning due to the damage, as narrated by KVUE.

Commendations for an organized and compassionate response have been echoed by residents, with KVUE viewer Cathy Belliveau expressing her affection for the community. "We love this place so much and hope that our friends can return soon," said Belliveau. "Great response from emergency services." Meanwhile, the Bent Tree Apartments management did not stand by idly, opening the complex office to offer those evacuated a warm space, complete with food and hot drinks to weather the morning's events.
As of 5:15 a.m., the Austin Fire Department had indicated that the flames had been mostly subdued, with crews focusing on the eradication of remaining hot spots and addressing the needs of those displaced. Though the units affected stand uninhabitable, officials reported no injuries from the incident. "Fire has been extinguished, crews working on extinguishing hot spots and placing displaced residents," AFD reported, as relayed by KXAN. Fire investigators are currently at the scene working to determine the origins of the blaze that disrupted many lives on this chilling January dawn.
