
A Providence fire truck was side-swiped by an SUV on Interstate 95 North on Sunday night, landing three firefighters and the SUV driver in the hospital with minor injuries. According to WPRI, authorities responded initially to a crash near the Thurbers Avenue exit and were on the scene when the accident occurred at around 8:30 p.m.
The collision happened as the fire truck, positioned to safeguard a work zone for the first responders, was struck unexpectedly. The vehicle in question, a reserve unit of the Providence Fire Department, suffered visible damage and had to subsequently be towed away. Footage captured by 12 News showed the extent of the aftermath as the fire truck was hauled from the crash site.
Meanwhile, WWLP reports that the 64-year-old male driver of the SUV, who smashed into the fire truck's rear corner, was issued several civil motor vehicle violations. He was also taken to the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery from his minor injuries. Fortunately, no Rhode Island State Police or additional Providence Fire personnel sustained injuries during this incident.
