Quincy's local favorite, The Fat Cat, announced it's closing its doors for good, drawing a 16-year history to a close. In a post on their Facebook page, the owners shared their heartache with patrons saying, "It is with great heartache that we have to inform you that we will be closing at the end of business on January 10." They further cited the impact of Covid and rising costs as the hard-hitting factors, despite the "kindness and generosity of Foxrock Properties."
The Fat Cat, which opened in 2007, wasn't just any comfort food joint; its burgers, lobster mac and wings were among the popular options that kept locals and tourists alike coming back for more, it later moved to a new spot on 1495 Hancock Street back in 2019. The ambiance was light-hearted, and the staff made you feel more than a customer but part of something like an extended family, as demonstrated on their website. They took pride in their spacious layout and the energy they brought in their new chapter.
Founding owner Neil Kiley set up the Cat back in 2009 with an eye for gathering folks together, over hearty meals and a drink, or three; their full bar offered an array of options for the thirsty, contributing to an experience that many Quincy dwellers have valued beyond measure.
It's the end of an era for The Fat Cat's dedicated patrons who saw its evolution from the original Chestnut Street location to its last standing Hancock Street address, the promised move back to East of Chestnut had hopeful hearts skipping a beat until Covid-19 and a harsh economic climate delivered the final blow. The imminent closure isn't just a loss for Quincy's dining scene but a shuttering of a venue that stood as a testament to community, shared meals, and the spirit of a small business trying to make it in an ever-challenging world.
