Booze and bad driving landed one motorist behind bars during a DUI crackdown in La Quinta. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office, in its mission to sober up the streets, held a DUI Saturation/Safety Enforcement Operation on Friday, January 26, which resulted in dozens of traffic stops and citations, according to a statement released by the department.
From late afternoon till the wee hours of the morning, deputies were on high alert, pulling over 43 vehicles and putting two drivers through field sobriety tests, one of whom ended up in cuffs for driving under the influence and another unfortunate driver caused a DUI Injury Collision which brought the total arrests to one and reminding us that our roads are battle against careless intoxication.
But the operation wasn't just a hunt for booze-addled drivers; any motorist flouting the traffic laws faced the music, with 31 citations doled out by vigilant officers. The Riverside County Sheriff added key advice about the dangers of mixing certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs with driving, underlining that “some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving.”
While some may think nothing of lighting up a joint or popping pills, the law draws a line, driving under the influence of marijuana is no different from drunk driving in the eyes of the law, and stiff penalties wait for those caught, as drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties—also a suspended license is often in the cards. The California Office of Traffic Safety, alongside the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, funded this operation, sending out a clear signal: if you're impaired, stay off the roads.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office concludes on a note of caution to the public, reinforcing the message that staying put is the safest bet if you’re not sober enough to drive, and reiterated their call to action, “Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1.” The fight against DUI is far from over, but operations like this show law enforcement's steadfast commitment to keeping the roads safe for all.
