In a cutthroat faceoff that could make or break their playoff dreams, the Houston Texans edged out the Indianapolis Colts with a narrow 23-19 victory this Saturday, securing their first playoff berth since 2019. Rookie sensation C.J. Stroud showed composure beyond his years, racking up 264 yards and two touchdowns, while Devin Singletary sealed the deal with a 3-yard touchdown run, according to FOX San Antonio.
Taking center stage, Stroud not only captivated with his arm, tossing a striking 75-yard touchdown pass to Nico Collins due to a defensive lapse by the Colts, but he also made history, connecting with Collins nine times for a whopping 195 yards and achieving a pristine passer rating of 134.1. Now Houston (10-7) awaits its fate, which hinges on Jacksonville's showdown with Tennessee, either as a potential host for the AFC wild-card weekend game or as one of the AFC's three wild-card teams, as reported by 10TV.
The Colts' run at the postseason, however, was harpooned when running back Tyler Goodson famously dropped a critical fourth-down pass in the closing minute. Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew, in a statement obtained by FOX San Antonio, reflected on the dropped ball, "We all have plays that we want back. Just because it's the last one makes it that much more significant." He reassured Goodson, "I told him I'd throw that ball every time. I trust him."
Down but not out, Minshew and his crew can only brood over the 'what-ifs', as the Colts find themselves on the outside looking in at the playoff picture. The frustration and emotion were palpable when Goodson, facing reporters, confessed his dismay over the mishap, "I worked too hard to drop a ball like that, but I have to accept it," according to a heart-wrenching interview by FOX San Antonio. On the flip side, the Texans snagged the victory, with coach DeMeco Ryans rallying his squad by saying, "It wasn't pretty, but it was gritty. We fought and found a way to get it done."
Among the paint-by-numbers of the game, the Texans set a franchise record with 46 sacks this season, while the Colts' rookie receiver Josh Downs etched his name into the books with a record 68 receptions. The Colts, meanwhile, are now tasked to dust themselves off and look to the offseason for answers to help them rebound next year.
