San Antonio residents are bracing for the coldest temperatures seen since December 2022, as an arctic blast is set to swoop in earlier than anticipated. The mercury is to expected to plummet starting Sunday morning, ushering in an icy grip across the region, with forecasts predicting wind chill temperatures nosediving into the single digits by early next week.
Before the big chill hits, San Antonians faced a wind advisory lasting until 1 p.m. on Friday, with gusts potentially topping 50 mph, according to a report by KENS5. The weekend prefacing this arctic onslaught will feature milder conditions, with Saturday expected to to offer residents a last chance to make preparations under more forgiving weather, with temperatures predicted in the low to mid 60s.
Once the arctic air swooshes in, Sunday morning will see temperatures in San Antonio plunge into the 30s amidst cloudy skies and gusty conditions. "The cold air will already have dropped temperatures in Austin down into the 20s and San Antonio to near-freezing," KENS5 reported on the looming cold snap. A slight chance of light freezing rain late into Sunday night could add a slick layer to the already frigid scenario.
The chill factor intensifies on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, where daybreak will greet the city with conditions in the 20s and wind chills potentially reaching into the teens. "Those planning to celebrate MLK Day outside should dress warmly; cover any exposed areas of skin, since the wind will still be blowing at 25 to 30 mph, allowing temperatures to feel like it's in the 20s," KENS5 cautioned. There's also a potential for patchy light rain, mist, or freezing mist to add to the day's biting cold.
However, the peak of this arctic episode is slated for Tuesday, when citizens will wake up to what could be the coldest day in the series. Morning temperatures may hover in the teens, with the wind chill pushing perceived temperatures down into the single digits. "Since the winds will still be blowing at 15 to 20 mph, wind-chill values could feel like temperatures are at 5 degrees!" KENS5 emphasized the severity of the impending freeze. By Wednesday, relief is expected as the city should experience an upward swing, with KENS5 projecting highs returning to the 50s and lows in the low 20s, signalling the end of the harshest cold.
