A pedestrian was killed just before midnight Saturday in the 1400 block of Hospitality Drive, a commercial hotel strip near Doctors Hospital of Laredo, prompting police to shut down eastbound traffic on Bob Bullock Loop at Hospitality Drive as investigators worked the scene.
Laredo police reported the crash at 11:54 p.m. Saturday, according to the Beaumont Enterprise. The Laredo Police Department activated its crash team to investigate, per LPD, and the department later confirmed the auto-pedestrian collision was fatal. The stretch of Hospitality Drive sits off Loop 20 and includes lodging properties such as the Tru by Hilton Laredo North, a short distance from the intersection where the crash occurred.
The crash happened close to Doctors Hospital of Laredo, a 183-bed acute care facility with a 24-hour emergency department that serves the north side of the city. Its proximity to the scene put emergency responders near the crash site, though the collision still proved fatal.
What Remains Unknown
As of the latest report, the identity of the pedestrian killed had not been released, and it remains unclear whether the driver stayed at the scene. Investigators have not said whether speed or impairment played a role, nor whether the pedestrian was crossing at an intersection or mid-block. Texas law places the burden of right-of-way differently depending on where a pedestrian crosses. Locally, an analysis of 2022 TxDOT crash records by Safe Roads USA found Laredo recorded 9,232 total traffic crashes that year, including 88 pedestrian accidents, 21 fatal crashes, and 1,534 injury collisions, translating to a traffic accident rate touching roughly 3.6 percent of the local population.
City's Vision Zero Push
The crash comes as Laredo leadership has been working to address exactly this kind of tragedy. In April 2025, the Laredo City Council adopted a $33 million Vision Zero Webb-Laredo Plan, a policy effort supported by Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez, aiming to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries on local roadways by 2040. The plan followed an 18-month regional crash study.
Federal money has also been flowing toward the effort. In 2023, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $1.6 million Safe Streets and Roads for All grant to the Webb County-City of Laredo Regional Mobility Authority, backed by $400,000 in local matching funds, to study regional crash trends and build a safety action plan. Separately, the Webb-Laredo RMA has partnered with local planning officials to put $1 million toward Phase IV of a roadway and bike/hike trail extension connecting Hospitality Drive to Bob Bullock Loop.
Whether any of those planned improvements touch the exact stretch where Saturday's fatal crash occurred is not addressed in available reporting. For now, the Laredo Police Department's crash team continues its investigation, and no further details on the victim, the driver, or a possible cause had been released as of the initial report.
