Two Texas Lutheran University students were killed early Monday in a single-vehicle wreck on State Highway 46 in Seguin as they were returning to town, according to police. The driver was 20 years old and the passenger was 23, and both attended Texas Lutheran University. The students were identified as A’Jean Augustine and Deyreck Dean.
According to the Seguin Gazette, citing Seguin Police Lt. Mike McCann, the crash was reported at approximately 2:38 a.m. on Monday. KSAT reported that it happened just after 2:30 a.m. that same morning.
Police said a southbound 2012 Kia Sorento was traveling south on SH 46 toward Seguin before it crossed into the northbound lanes near a bridge over FM Road 78. The vehicle struck a guardrail on the bridge, then skidded along the barrier before coming to a stop, per the Gazette's reporting of Lt. McCann's account. Seguin police said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Highway Closed After Crash
KSAT reported that both northbound and southbound lanes of State Highway 46 just north of Interstate 10 in Seguin were closed following the crash.
Texas Lutheran University confirmed the loss of two students, identifying them by name and providing class-year and student-athlete details, the Gazette reported. The crash investigation remains ongoing, and the Gazette described its coverage as a developing story that would be updated as more details emerge.
A Corridor With a Troubled Safety Record
The stretch of SH 46 running from SH 16 to Interstate 10 recorded 244 reported crashes between 2021 and 2025, including six fatal collisions, according to FOX 26 Houston. The Texas Department of Transportation identified unsafe speed, failure to control speed and driver inattention as primary contributing factors across that corridor's crash history, the station reported.
TxDOT has already completed $2 million in immediate safety upgrades along the highway, including new warning signs, rumble strips, pavement markings and brush clearing, per FOX 26 Houston's reporting. Preliminary 2025 data showed a 7% drop in total crashes on SH 46 compared with the prior year following those initial improvements, the station noted. A feasibility study is also evaluating whether to expand SH 46 into a four-lane divided roadway with wider shoulders, medians or center turn lanes, additional passing lanes and realigned curves, with construction on planned intersection upgrades slated to begin in late 2027.
This is not the only deadly crash Seguin has seen on SH 46 in recent memory. A multi-vehicle collision at State Highway 46 North and Cordova Road killed two drivers on November 19, according to KENS 5. Police said a southbound Jeep Cherokee veered into northbound traffic and struck a Chrysler 300 head-on; the station reported the two deceased drivers were identified as Natalie Jean Gage-Avila, 23, of New Braunfels, and Marcus Keshawn Harris, 37, of Luling. A third person was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, and two additional drivers whose vehicles struck debris from the crash were evaluated by Seguin EMS, per the same report.
No information connecting Monday's crash to the broader corridor statistics or planned roadway projects has been released. The investigation into the deaths of the two Texas Lutheran University students remains active.
