In San Antonio, the surge in extreme weather conditions has translated into a sharp rise in animal neglect cases. Local Animal Care Services (ACS) is feeling the pressure as calls flood in reporting pets left to endure the bitter cold and scorching heat. ACS Director Shannon Sims, in a statement obtained by FOX San Antonio, revealed the trend: "Anytime we go into a situation like this, we see a severe spike in the number of neglect calls that come in because you see animals out in these frigid temperatures." ACS has already initiated overtime to ensure maximum coverage.

With 940 service calls about weather-related violations, and 170 criminal citations issued, the problem is pressing. Offenders can face fines up to $2,000 and potential jail time, particularly for repeat offenses. ACS emphasizes the importance of proper pet sheltering, reminding residents that if it's too cold for them, it's too cold for their animals, as reported by FOX San Antonio.

The torment doesn't end with the winter chill; as temperatures soar, so do instances of neglect. ACS has seen a 26% increase in heat-related neglect calls since May. Aimee De Contreras, field operations manager for ACS, told KSAT, "People will have animals outside, sometimes just in the sun without shade is what we see a lot." Tragically, two dogs have succumbed to the heat this summer.

Amidst the heatwave, veterinarian Rachael Smith from Animal Hospital San Antonio warns against taking pets on hot hikes and to be vigilant for signs of heat exhaustion. "Every vet in town has seen dogs burned, paws walking on the cement," she disclosed in an interview with KSAT. The urgency is clear: "Once your pet’s in that position where we’re talking heat exhaustion, it's an emergency visit. We’re going to lose your pet, so there’s no time to waste," Smith added. For outdoor pets, creating a cool indoor space is imperative for their survival during harsh weather peaks.
