A San Antonio man was struck and killed by a vehicle as he attempted to assist another driver with a flat tire on Loop 410's access road. The accident occurred late Saturday in the 6900 block of NW Loop 410 access road, near Alamo Downs Parkway, KSAT reported.
The 40-year-old victim, whose identity has not been released, was hit when retrieving a car jack from his black 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, with emergency lights flashing, to help out another vehicle in distress. According to San Antonio police statements, a Mitsubishi Galant, hastily exiting the loop, collided into the man and his parked Ford Explorer. The man was taken to the hospital but sadly did not survive his injuries.
FOX San Antonio's coverage of the incident highlighted the fact that the Mitsubishi's driver was neither intoxicated nor using a cell phone. However, a momentary lapse in attention proved fatal when an object falling from the passenger seat caused the driver to look away from the road, leading to the tragic collision.
The San Antonio Police Department is still looking deeply into the circumstances surrounding this incident. Meanwhile, the accident serves to harshly remind the community about the critical need to always remain focused on the road. Distractions can prove deadly, even amidst the most mundane of roadside encounters, effectively turning routine moments into irreversible tragedies.
