A high-speed street race on Interstate 10 East led to the arrest of a 44-year-old man, who now faces charges for reckless conduct and potentially placing a child's life in jeopardy. Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputies intervened in a race where speeds soared beyond 100 mph, with a six-year-old child improperly secured in one of the participating vehicles.
During the traffic stop conducted on Saturday, deputies apprehended Leonard Santiago Estrada, the driver of a Porsche. In a bold move to quickly subdue the danger, the deputy pursued the racing vehicles in the westbound lanes of the 8800 block of IH-10 E and managed to pull over Estrada, while the other driver evaded capture, according to a report by KSAT.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office released a statement indicating that the child, sitting in the Porsche's back seat, was restrained only with a seat belt and not in a proper child safety seat. As per a Fox San Antonio story, Estrada now confronts legal repercussions, including charges of racing on a highway and endangering a child.
Estrada was taken into custody, and his vehicle has been seized as the investigation proceeds. "More importantly, the lesson to be learned in this incident is, if you get caught street racing, you will go to jail, and ultimately have your vehicle seized by law enforcement," BCSO articulated in a cautionary note on their Facebook post, per a statement obtained by KSAT. The incident reignites concerns over street racing, which recent changes in law now address with heightened severity, endorsing vehicle confiscation as a deterrent.
