Drivers in San Antonio are digging deeper into their wallets as gas prices have sharply increased from just a week ago. A regular gallon of unleaded fuel in the city hit $2.85 earlier today, a noticeable uptick from $2.76 seven days earlier, according to AAA Texas. The jump of nine cents yesterday alone marks a stark contrast to the decreasing prices observed in parts of the Lower Atlantic region. The statewide average in Texas currently stands at $2.82, three cents less than San Antonio's price, as reported by KSAT.
A closer look at crude oil, the major component of gasoline, reveals it's becoming more costly. Last week, prices saw an unexpected boost likely due to a significant decline in U.S. inventories, combined with a production dip amidst winter weather. This has led market analysts with Oil Price Information Service to suggest that the conditions could favor to even further push higher crude oil prices in the upcoming weeks. "More expensive crude oil is beginning to push retail gasoline prices higher, including here in Texas," Daniel Armbruster of AAA Texas told KSAT. He noted that as much as 60 percent of the cost we pay at the pump can be attributed to crude oil prices.
Meanwhile, drivers in the Lower Atlantic states are experiencing a slight reprieve. Last Monday, the regional average fell to $2.94 per gallon, down four cents from the previous week's $2.98, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Despite the recent increase of about six cents since last month, these states, including heavy-hitters like Florida and Georgia, have seen prices swing from as low as $2.88 in December to a peak of $3.66 in August last year.
With the national average gas price last week at $3.06, it is about 3.9% higher than prices in the Lower Atlantic region. This figure represents a minor dip from the previous week's average of $3.07, according to data published by the Gaston Gazette. The subtle nationwide decrease may provide some solace, but with recent market movements, it is uncertain how long this trend will last.
As prices continue to fluctuate, experts like Armbruster suggest that the key to savings could lie in regular vehicle maintenance and driving at optimum speeds to improve fuel efficiency. Moreover, leveraging resources such as the free AAA mobile app to locate the cheapest gas options available becomes increasingly vital for consumers looking to alleviate some of the pressure on their finances.
