Earlier today, a San Antonio Police Department officer is recovering from surgery after being shot during a traffic stop. The officer was conducting a suspected DWI stop when the incident occurred at around 1 a.m. near the 8200 block of Marbach Road, as reported by FOX San Antonio.

In a detailed account by Police Chief William McManus provided to KENS 5, two officers initially pulled over the driver for the traffic stop. Walking up to the suspect's vehicle, the chaos unfolded as the passenger opened fire. "The officer on the passenger side was hit and went down," McManus said. While returning fire, the officers witnessed the shooter take the driver's seat and flee the scene.

The officer who was hit, a six-year veteran of the force, was taken to University Hospital in stable condition. After the frightening encounter, the suspect's car was later found abandoned, a discovery which now has local law enforcement scouring the area for the fleeing assailant.

As the injured officer lays in the hospital recovering from the wounds received in surgery, the San Antonio Police Department is now urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect to come forward. The suspect remains at large, with the public's help is being enlisted by officials to aid in their capture by calling 210-224-7867, as stated in FOX San Antonio report.
