San Antonio's Codeup Coding Boot Camp Closes Abruptly, Leaving Students and Staff StrandedSource: Google Street View

Codeup, a San Antonio coding boot camp, has shut down without warning, locking out staff and students and leaving a trail of confusion and rent delinquency in its wake. The company's sudden collapse came to light when a delinquency notice was plastered on its door, indicating a failure to pay rent, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.

The lockout notice, served by lessor NE Loop 410 LLC, stated that the new key to the premises would be provided only if the “tenant pays the delinquent rent," a sum unspecified in the notice. The path to this point began in December with the abrupt announcement, via email, that classes were canceled and employees' contracts terminated effective immediately. Despite the air of finality, the office's cold shutdown directly affected an estimated 70-100 students, and 20-40 faculty members, as reported by KSAT.

The email sent to staff indicated that a combination of economic conditions and insufficient funding led to the decision to cease operations. Former director of career services at Codeup, India Byrd, told KSAT that she believed the problem was that Codeup expanded too quickly to be sustainable. "They had the same amount of staff to place 300 students or so that they had working to place less than 100, and it just wasn't sustainable," Byrd said.

Amidst the fallout, local tech community hub Geekdom has offered a helping hand to the dislocated. "One of the things that we here at Geekdom are trying to do, because of our close partnership with Codeup, is offer any staff or instructors or students access to our community for the next three months for free,” stated Charles Woodin of Geekdom. Meanwhile, Laura Ruiz-Roehrs, a former staffer has organized an event to discuss the viability of coding boot camps in the current tech landscape.
