San Antonio is gearing up for the 37th Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Celebration, a monumental event that stands as one of the nation's largest tributes to the civil rights leader's legacy. Returning to an in-person format, the march is set to take place on Monday, January 15, with festivities kicking off at 10 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, marching towards Pittman-Sullivan Park, according to a report by KSAT.
After last year's virtual commemoration, residents and visitors are invited to participate in the march, which will be devoid of motorcycles, cars, or any motor vehicles. Marchers can line up starting at 9 a.m. for the event that has been a platform for community solidarity and remembrance. The theme heralding this year's celebration stands as "Yesterday’s Dream, Today’s Vision, Tomorrow’s Reality!"
Transportation won't be an issue for those looking to join. To ensure everyone has access, free VIA bus service will be available from 8 to 10 a.m. There are two pick-up points: Freeman Coliseum, 3201 E. Houston St., and St. Philip’s College, 1801 Martin Luther King Dr., as per the KSAT report. These buses will drop participants off on MLK Drive, west of Upland Drive, facilitating easy access to the march's onset.
Celebratory activities will continue after the march at Pittman-Sullivan Park, with multicultural performances gracing the main stage, alongside areas dedicated to health and wellness, youth activities, and a spread of food and merchandise vendors. They will be complemented by information booths aimed to educate and engage the community, providing details to participants at the park until 3 p.m. Those interested in attending are encouraged by the City of San Antonio and Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez to be part of what they suggest could be the largest march in the nation, as per the city's event page.
Participants looking to head back will not be left stranded, with return bus services lined up from noon to 3 p.m. from Pittman-Sullivan Park to the original pick-up locations.
