A 24-year-old woman named Kamryn McKee is under scrutiny after Bexar County deputies stumbled upon a shocking display of animal cruelty in a far-west-side apartment complex. According to a KENS5 report, the pungent whiff of death triggered a welfare check that resulted in the grim finding of an "extremely decomposed" pit bull and the rescue of another dog barely clinging to life, emaciated and weak.
After being alerted by residents about the stench, animal control confirmed the presence of the odor and helped deputies gain entrance into McKee's residence with maintenance staff initiating the discovery. The accused owner, who had last claimed to see the dogs in a healthy state on New Year's Day, was arrested and charged with third-degree felony animal cruelty after her statement didn't seem to add up with the dogs' severe condition. After telling deputies she went to get her nails done, McKee said the dogs were okay, a claim Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar dismissed as dishonest, suggesting a more prolonged duration of neglect. "That, to me, is a lie," Salazar declared, as recounted by KENS5.
McKee, who was released after posting a $2,000 bond, faces severe consequences for her actions involving between two and 10 years behind bars, along with the possibility of a hefty fine up to $10,000. Sheriff Salazar emphasized the gravity of the situation during the arrest, alluding to a potential correlation between animal cruelty and more serious offenses. "Anybody that’s capable of just letting an animal be neglected to the point where they’re gonna die of starvation that just tells me that’s a person with a cold, cold heart that could possibly do something along those lines to a human as well," he said, as KENS5 stated.
Meanwhile, Sergeant Hernandez from the Special Enforcement Section, who was tasked with investigating the case, revealed more distressing details during a press briefing Thursday afternoon. Going to Castroville, the investigation led to an apartment on the 5000 block of Mansions Bluff, following a foul smell report. Blurred images shown during the briefing, which underscored the severity of the neglect and have been described as deeply disturbing, acted as a visual testimony to the prolonged suffering endured by the helpless animals. According to a MSN article, the grim visuals prompted officials to cast doubts on McKee's capacity for empathy and care, pertinent not only to animals but potentially to humans as well.
