The San Antonio Zoo is starting 2024 on a high note with the arrival of a newborn babirusa piglet, a species known for its unique tusks and rarity. The little piglet is a first for the facility, heralding a new era for the zoo's conservation and breeding programs.

Tim Morrow, President and CEO of San Antonio Zoo, announced the birth, stating, "We're absolutely thrilled to welcome this precious piglet to our family," Despite their less traditional appeal, Morrow expressed confidence that the piglet would charm visitors with its distinctive look. "Sure, some might call them 'ugly ducklings,' but we can't help but find them irresistibly adorable in their own unique way. We just know the public will fall in love with this little gem too." he said, according to a statement obtained by FOX San Antonio.

The arrival of this piglet is particularly significant given the vulnerability of the babirusa species, which face threats from poaching and habitat destruction in their native Indonesian habitats. Babirusas have been part of San Antonio Zoo since 1998, intriguing visitors with their unusual appearance and now, contributing to the global efforts to protect this vulnerable species.

Due to the nature of the species, babirusas typically give birth to only one or two offspring. This makes the birth even more noteworthy, "The birth of this precious baby babirusa represents a testament to San Antonio Zoo's commitment to conservation and education," read a written statement by the zoo, provided to Express News. The gender of the newborn is still unknown, and a name selection process seems yet to be underway.

The public can expect updates on the piglet’s progress, including when it will be available for public viewing, on the zoo's social media pages, @SanAntonioZoo.
