In a recent homage to the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., the San Bernardino County Museum joined forces with the Power of the Press: Black Voice News @ 50 exhibit curators, Hardy Brown II and Paulette Brown-Hinds, to host a thought-provoking exhibit talk. According to a county announcement, the event on January 14 was aimed not just to celebrate MLK Day but also to spark a broader conversation on civil rights and the individuals who have paved the way in the industry.
"We wanted to have to quickly pivot and engage with a larger conversation about civil rights," Brown II said when discussing the reason behind aligning the talk with MLK's birthday weekend. He emphasized that their newspaper strives to tell the stories of those who have contributed to the empowerment of civil rights. Brown further revealed insights during the event, noting, "I realized something, that the story is not about us, it’s about every person that made it in the Inland Empire."
The exhibit goes to great lengths to highlight the Black Voice News as an important local government watchdog and a chronicler of Black life in the Inland Empire. It features the profiles of regional leaders, reports on community events, assets mapping, and coverage of the never-ending struggle for social justice and racial equity.
Closing on March 3, this exhibit doesn't only pay tribute to the past but also brings to light the ongoing efforts of Black Voice News in recording and impacting local histories. The exhibition is a testament to the publication’s dedication to the upliftment of Black communities and the persistent fight to maintain fairness and racial equity.
Located at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands, the San Bernardino County Museum operates Tuesdays through Sundays, offering various exhibits that showcase regional cultural and natural history. It reflects the county's mission to endorse arts, culture, and education, which, in turn, strengthens the quality of life for both its residents and visitors. Admission rates apply, but perks such as free parking and accessibility features ensure that the museum's treasures are available to everyone.
