Quick response and a dose of Narcan saved a life in Needles, California, after deputies rushed to the scene of a reported drug overdose this past Sunday. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies received the distress call near Smokestack Street and N Street at about 8:10 p.m., according to a report. Deputies found the individual unresponsive and exhibiting signs of a fentanyl overdose, prompting them to administer the life-saving opioid antagonist.
Despite the first dose of Narcan being administered to the victim who was discovered in the desert just northeast of the intersection, the individual remained unresponsive. Persisting in their life-saving efforts, the deputies performed sternum rubs and proceeded with a second dose of Narcan, which brought the victim back from the brink, eventually regaining consciousness and the ability to breathe on their own.
The identity of the patient has been kept confidential, but following the revival, the individual was transported to a local hospital for further medical attention. The incident underscores the troubling persistence of the opioid epidemic which continues to claim lives across the nation.
In the wake of the incident, the Colorado River Station/Needles Police Department appeals to the public for any information that can shed light on the overdose. Deputies believe that with community assistance, they can combat the drug issues plaguing local streets, despite that the authorities are yet to identify any suspects in direct relation to the overdose.
The Department encourages residents to reach out to Deputy E. Nilsen at (760) 326-9200 with any relevant details.
