San Mateo County's beloved Coyote Point Recreation Area is hitting some bumps in the road, with numerous closures throwing a wrench into residents' plans for outdoor fun.

For starters, come January 17, the Magic Mountain Playground is getting a temporary shutdown. From the crack of dawn at 8 am until the afternoon wraps at 4 pm, the playground is off-limits to kids and parents alike, due to scheduled maintenance, according to San Mateo County Parks’ announcement. But wait, there's more. The Eucalyptus Playground has been slapped with an indefinite closure, the aftermath of a safety inspection gone awry. Essential repairs and replacements are on the horizon, although no one's quite sure when they will be complete, leaving families without their go-to play zone for an undetermined stint.

Moreover, a hike on the Bluff Trail behind CuriOdyssey isn’t in the cards, as a landslide has taken a chunk out of the trail, rendering it unsafe and shut down for public use.

And if you were planning on parking your car in the Knoll area, think again. That parking lot has been commandeered as a log collection zone - relics of the winter 2023 storms that swept through the county. With traditional parking spots hijacked by woodpile storage, visitors must scramble for a new spot to stow their cars while enjoying the rest of the park’s features.

With play areas cordoned off and trails crumbling, San Mateo County Parks are facing a wave of closures that will impact local recreation for the foreseeable future. Officials urge park-goers to stay tuned for updates and explore other Coyote Point areas while these facilities remain under wraps.
