San Mateo Sheriff's Office Releases Findings on Inmate Deaths, Cites Natural Causes and SuicideSource: Google Street View

In a grim revelation, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office has released findings from the District Attorney's Office concerning the deaths of two inmates within a day of each other in October. According to reports, Peter McLaughlin, 64, was found unresponsive during a routine cell check early on the morning of October 20 at the Maguire Correctional Facility. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, McLaughlin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said an independent investigation found that McLaughlin had an undiagnosed cancerous brain tumor, which was determined to be his cause of death casually. In a statement released to the public, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office claimed to have found no other contributing factors related to McLaughlin's passing.

Similarly, the following evening on October 21, 34-year-old Ronald Simmons was also discovered alone and unresponsive in his cell by Correctional Officers. Lifesaving attempts were made, but Simmons was too later pronounced dead at the facility. The District Attorney's subsequent inquiry into Simmons' death concluded it to be a result of suicide, with no other factors involved, as per a report released by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

These two back-to-back incidents have prompted the authorities to emphasize their commitment to inmate welfare and transparency. "The well-being and safety of those in our custody is our highest priority. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. McLaughlin and Mr. Simmons," Sheriff Christina Corpus said in the report.

In light of these events, the Sheriff's Office has ensured the public that all protocols were followed correctly and that detailed findings have been shared with the community swiftly upon conclusion of the investigations.
