The nation's culinary talents got a nod today as the James Beard Foundation released its list of semifinalists for the 2024 awards. Among the cream of the crop, Seattle's food scene snagged several spots on the esteemed lineup, with local chefs and restaurants now in the running for what's considered the Oscars of the food world. According to Seattle Met, standout mentions include Renee Erickson’s Walrus and the Carpenter for Outstanding Restaurant, and Aaron Verzosa of Archipelago for Outstanding Chef, with the Pham siblings — of Pho Bac Sup Shop and other ventures — getting another nod for Outstanding Restaurateur.

Newcomers have made their way onto the scene, too, with Janet Becerra of Pancita recognized as an Emerging Chef and Ben Campbell of Ben’s Bread Co. gunning for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker. As for the regional Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific category, Seattle represents strongly alongside noteworthy chefs from Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Alaska. With a chef from Tacoma making a premiere appearance on this list, the region's culinary diversity and excellence is unmistakably showcased.

Significant changes have taken place in the awards’ approach in recent years, with the aim of remedying past biases. The James Beard Foundation has implemented new categories and altered voting procedures to foster greater inclusivity and recognize a wider geography of culinary talent. This is the third awards season to reflect changes made in the wake of an extensive 2021 audit to address the longstanding biases baked into the awards process as reported by Eater. Part of these changes includes the increase of judges and committee members of color, efforts taken towards achieving at least a fifty percent representation by the 2023 awards.

Judges will embark on a culinary pilgrimage of sorts, dining at and evaluating the nominated establishments before finalists are announced on April 3. The winners will then be honored at a gala ceremony set for June 10 in Chicago. The food community and its aficionados await with bated breath to see which chefs and restaurants will rise above the rest in this competitive landscape, cementing their place in the country's gastronomic annals.
