The smackdown was real in Oklahoma City Thunder's latest tussle with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where the Thunder clinched a 102-97 victory on Saturday night. As reported by MPR News, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the undeniable star of the night, dropping 33 points, including 11 that came roaring in during the final quarter to seal the win against the Timberwolves in a gripping Western Conference showdown.
While the Thunder seemed to fall behind with an 11-point deficit early in the fourth, they managed to not just even up the stakes but to also come out on top. The victory brought them a step closer in standings, reducing the gap to just one game below Minnesota. "We just had great resilience tonight," Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged in a statement obtained by MPR News. He tipped his hat to the team's defensive efforts, especially when their shooting wasn't exactly on fire.
Jaylin Williams supported the Thunder's cause with a solid 20 points while homegrown talent Chet Holmgren added 15 to the scoreboard. On the Timberwolves' side, Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns each put up 19 points, with Naz Reid pitching in with 18, as per details from CBS News Minnesota. Despite this, turnovers became the thorn in their side, surrendering possession 21 times, which the Thunder capitalized on to score 28 points.
It was a thrill-packed finish as Oklahoma City went on a 19-7 run to tie the game at 90 with just under four minutes left on the clock. Gilgeous-Alexander's crucial three-pointer with 1:14 remaining shot the Thunder into the lead. "He’s so much confident. He knows he can make those shots for the team," Thunder's Luguentz Dort told MPR News of Gilgeous-Alexander's game-changing basket. The Wolves struggled to find their mark in the closing seconds, and despite a last-ditch foul on Edwards in a three-point attempt, missed free throws saw the Thunder emerge victorious.
With two of the three season meetings now in Oklahoma City's favor, the final face-off is set to take place at their home court on January 29. The Thunder next take on Portland on Tuesday, while the Timberwolves will try to shake off the loss when they play host to Charlotte on Monday, as the battle for Western dominance continues.
