In a somber conclusion to a harrowing case of domestic violence, Euren Balbuena, 33, from Simi Valley, has been handed down a heavy sentence for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Zaira Patino-Trejo—33 years to life in prison, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office reports. Balbuena, whose fate was sealed by a jury conviction on November 21, 2023, now faces a grim future behind bars after being found guilty of first-degree murder, among other charges.
The chilling details emerge from the sentencing documents; on February 27, 2020, an argument between Balbuena and Patino-Trejo escalated tragically in their Simi Valley apartment—Patino-Trejo's mother, suspecting trouble, arrived to find her daughter with clear signs of abuse and upon trying to leave with her, Balbuena refused to let them go and instead attacked the mother with a knife, slashing her head, then turned and stabbed Patino-Trejo more than 30 times with several knives, the DA's office announced.
After the attack, the bloodied mother managed to escape and get help from a bystander who dialed 911; when police officers from the Simi Valley Police Department arrived, they apprehended Balbuena who was still in the apartment and took him into custody. In a statement obtained by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, Supervising Senior Deputy District Attorney Melissa Suttner spoke on the irreversible loss, "Zaira Patino-Trejo was such a vibrant young woman with a bright future," lamenting the tragedy while expressing a hope that the sentence could bring some solace to the bereaved family.
The jury also found true two special allegations against Balbuena—that he personally used a knife in the slaying of Patino-Trejo and caused great bodily injury during the commission of a felony, Balbuena was convicted of several charges including murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery confirming the jury's determination on the serious nature of the violent act,
. With Balbuena now sentenced, the criminal chapter of this tragic story comes to a close as the community reckons with the severity of domestic violence and its devastating consequences.
