In a devastating turn of events, four young children have tragically lost their lives following a house fire in Somers, Connecticut, late Tuesday evening. Identified as ages 5, 6, 8, and 12, the children were in a two-family home on Quality Avenue when the blaze overtook the residence, as confirmed by town and fire officials.
First Selectman Tim Keeney described the event as an "incredible loss” for the community, stating that when firefighters arrived at the scene, the house was already fully engulfed in flames, according to an NBC Connecticut report. Despite their efforts, the crews encountered significant challenges entering the burning structure due to a blocked back entrance, and intense flames barring the front door.
The blaze, which resulted in the complete loss of the home, also caused injuries to several other people. "The whole front of the house was very involved. The first floor right up to the second floor. Limited access. Very hard to get in there," were the words of Somers Fire Chief John Roache, who also noted the heroic efforts of firefighters to rescue victims. One individual reportedly jumped from a second-floor window to evade the fire, as per CT Public.
The response to the tragic event also includes support for the affected students in the area. Somers Public Schools Superintendent Sam Galloway vowed to provide counseling staff support, stating, "Our staff, students, and families will support each other as we navigate this tragedy," in a statement obtained by NBC Connecticut. In tandem, community assistance from social services has been announced for those directly affected, and support is being arranged for the responding firefighters as well.
Investigators, including the Connecticut State Police and the state fire marshal's office, remained on the premises into Wednesday, working to determine the cause of the harrowing incident that claimed four young lives, and has left the town of Somers in mourning.
