Two men have found themselves behind bars after Springfield cops busted them with two illegal firearms following a shooting incident. According to the Springfield Police Department, the arrests occurred in the early hours of Thursday at around 2:45 a.m.

Responding to the ShotSpotter alert, officers rushed to the 100 block of Dickinson Street, where they discovered evidence and later an adult male with a gunshot wound who independently sought treatment at Baystate with non-life-threatening injuries. Real-Time Analysis Center analysts took to the city cameras, spotting a vehicle later linked to the shooting. Springfield's finest quickly beamed a photo of the suspect car to the patrolling officers, who spotted and pursued the vehicle. The driver, Antonio Vega, hitched a short, swift ride before crashing on Longhill Street.

Vega, alongside his passenger Julio Nunez-Jimenez, were subsequently detained. Searching the duo and their wreck revealed a spent shell casing in Vegas’s pocket, another inside the car, and two illegal firearms—a loaded ghost gun included—alongside crack cocaine. Both suspects boast unsavory rap sheets: Vega is currently out on bail for assault with a dangerous weapon, and Nunez-Jimenez, no stranger to prison, was recently released.

The 24-year-old Springfield resident Vega faces a laundry list of charges, including possession of a large-capacity firearm and assault & battery with a dangerous weapon. His passenger, Nunez-Jimenez, also 24 and from the same city, mirrors many of the same charges, painting a stark portrait of repeat offenders. The Springfield PD has yet to release Vega's booking photo.
