The Springfield Police Department made a significant arrest on Saturday night when officers pulled over a vehicle and subsequently seized a loaded firearm and a stash of drugs on Washburn Street. According to the department's official website, 32-year-old Austrian Peguese, now facing multiple charges, was apprehended after a brief foot chase that ensued when he assaulted a police officer during a traffic stop.
The incident took place around 10:30 p.m. when police noticed a car with a suspicious license plate on Plainfield Street. The routine traffic stop quickly escalated as Peguese, a repeat offender with a criminal history, tried to fully resist arrest, striking an officer before attempting to flee the scene. Officers subsequently managed to take him into custody.
Digging through his belongings, law enforcement discovered more than just the loaded firearm in Peguese's possession. The Springfield Police reported finding 52 suspected cyclobenzaprine pills, crack-cocaine, and suboxone, all packed away in a fanny pack. These discoveries have led to serious drug distribution charges being added to Peguese's already lengthy rap sheet.
Peguese is no stranger to the law, with previous convictions for firearms charges from 2012 and 2016, as well as a drug distribution conviction from 2016. His record has now been lengthened to include carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession with the intent to distribute class B and E drugs, along with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. The detainees list of offenses is indicative of a pattern that the Springfield Police seem determined to permanently disrupt.
The passenger in the car was released without charges. Meanwhile, charges against Peguese include assault and battery on a police officer and failure to stop for police, among others. This marks yet another chapter in what appears to be a consistent battle against repeat offenders in the Springfield area.
