The Santa Rosa Police Department has reported a crackdown on gang-related activity manifests in a flurry of graffiti tags throughout downtown, leading to the arrests of two local men. The graffiti, branding concrete structures in the area, drew the attention of an SRPD officer last December, who believed the markings signified gang connections, the department revealed via Facebook.
An investigation spearheaded by the Gang Crimes Team has resulted in the apprehension of Ricardo Reynoso Hernandez, 21, and Pedro Rodriguez, 18, known to the detectives from prior run-ins with the law, identified as suspects via security footage from the Santa Rosa Plaza. Tailing detective work pegged the damage costs at about $2,000.
The graffiti—spray-painted symbols and scrawls that the SRPD asserts are gang signatures—served a darker purpose than mere vandalism, meant to stake out territory and intimidate the public. The arrests, occurring on January 2 for Hernandez and January 8 for Rodriguez, placed both men in the crosshairs of multiple charges: felony vandalism and gang enhancements, as specified by the department.
Underlining the seriousness of these charges, the police used the arrests to call on Santa Rosa residents to stay vigilant and report criminal defacement using the “MySantaRosa” app, an initiative to maintain the city's aesthetic and order. The app, detailed on the city's website, allows Santa Rosans to directly upload locations and photos of neighborhood nuisances, such as unsightly graffiti, for swift action.
