Students in the Sterling Heights area are set to benefit from a generous scholarship program, as the Sterling Heights Area Community Foundation, along with 12 partners, is doling out $34,000 in awards this May, the Foundation announced Monday. Local college hopefuls and those already in school can shoot their shot by applying before the March 15 deadline, according to the City of Sterling Heights.
Featured in this philanthropic ensemble are big names like BAE Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems, chucking in scholarships for students gunning for degrees in STEM fields, with the range including everything from engineering wonders to public service pursuits, chiro-practitioners even get a look in with five separate scholarships, this has been a move that's been repeated for 26 years running, and the program has funded the dreams of over 500 students since it kicked off in 1999.
Individual scholarships aren't just small change, with awards such as General Dynamics Land Systems's $2,000 pot for tech-savvy seniors, or the five $2,000 scholarships from the Macomb County Chiropractic Association aimed at those angling to align spines. Aspiring to a government gig in public service? The Mayor Richard J. Notte Scholarship tables $1,000 to that end. Not left out of the mix are sons and daughters of military members with a connection to Selfridge Air National Guard Base, who could snag a $1,000 scholarship for themselves.
Karl G. Oskoian, the big chief at the Foundation, tipped his hat to the consistent contributions of the scholarship partners in a statement saying, "Community leaders, like our 12 scholarship partners, make a difference in the lives of not only the students but the community at large," acknowledging the impact these funds have on the students and the wider Sterling Heights area. The collective effort reflects an investment in the next generation's slate of professionals, teachers, tech heads, and more, a bet on the area's own future, as per the City of Sterling Heights.
