A routine traffic stop escalated into a shootout in Bibb County yesterday, when a deputy encountered suspects in a stolen vehicle, resulting in one man being shot by law enforcement. The drama unfolded around 11 a.m. in the 800 block of West Grenada Terrace, Macon, leading to gunfire exchanges after the suspects tried to make a hasty escape, authorities reported.

Initially identified by a Flock Safety surveillance system, the vehicle drew the attention of a deputy for being stolen. As detailed by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, the situation intensified when the occupants fled the vehicle and one individual, weapon in hand, allegedly fired at the pursuing deputies. In the ensuing response, one suspect was hit in the arm, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported.

Following the exchange, paramedics treated the wounded man on the scene before transporting him to a local medical facility; his condition has been reported as stable. "Deputies returned fire and struck the armed subject," a news release from the sheriff's office explained. Aside from the suspect, no other injuries were reported during the incident.

Further investigation at the scene led to more individuals being taken in for questioning but no additional charges at that moment. "They were younger individuals," Sheriff David Davis told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, providing insight into the ongoing developments. Davis continued, "One of the occupants ran to one of the apartments just behind where vehicle stop happened. And there were some individuals in that particular apartment that have been taken in for questioning."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to spearhead the inquiry into the shooting, while the Bibb County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Office will also conduct its own internal investigation to review the actions taken during the incident.
