Chaos unfolded on the city's Northwest Side early Friday when a driver, now being assessed for a possible DWI, barrelled the wrong way down Interstate 10 resulting in a violent head-on crash with another sedan, as reported by the San Antonio Police Department. The harrowing incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near Vance Jackson Road, snarling traffic and sending emergency responders scrambling to the scene.
The wrong-way driver, whose identity has not been released, reportedly embarked on their perilous journey near Boerne Stage Road, managing a 14-mile stint against traffic before the crash while officials promptly shut down westbound lanes of Interstate 10 for over an hour, causing significant delays, according to KENS 5. Despite the early hour, the repercussions of the driver's actions sowed disruption as they tore through the heart of the city's transit arteries before the inevitable collision ensued bringing their dangerous drive to an abrupt end.
The aftermath of the collision saw the other driver, fortunate to escape the steel mangling with their life, taken to a local hospital to be checked out; a sparing grace in an event where all lanes were blocked for an hour and a half, noted in an account by the KSAT News. Both the San Antonio Police Department and the San Antonio Fire Department, alongside EMS and TxDOT’s Hero unit, converged on the scene, orchestrating the roadside havoc into some semblance of order, ensuring the swift reopening of the stretch of Interstate 10 post-investigation.
The incident remains under investigation by authorities as they probe into the cause and the sequence of events leading to the crash, including the possibility of an intoxication offense.
