A man was shot by SWAT officers following an early morning shooting rampage at a West Side apartment complex in San Antonio, according to authorities. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. Tuesday when police received calls about gunfire coming from the Timbercreek Apartments off Timbercreek Drive near West Military Drive.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told FOX San Antonio that the suspect, a 43-year-old man with a military background and known mental health issues, was firing shots indiscriminately inside his apartment and into the neighboring units, terrifying residents. One 911 caller reported hearing as many as 30 shots, while another claimed about 10 shots echoed over the phone during the police call.
The situation escalated when responding officers were immediately met with gunfire that struck a police cruiser. As standard protocol, officers pulled back, secured the vicinity, and requested support from SWAT and negotiators. Several nearby residences were evacuated as a safety measure, though no neighbors were reported injured, McManus said.
In a statement obtained by KSAT, McManus shared that the standoff continued until about 3:30 a.m. when SWAT managed to "neutralize" the shooter by grazing him in the head. Despite his injury, the man was able to walk out and was subsequently transported to an area hospital. His condition has not been made public.
Following the incident, investigators recovered several firearms from the man's apartment. “The officers did what they had to do,” McManus told reporters. The investigation into the shooting and the circumstances leading up to it is ongoing.
